Work category 114: Structures maintenance

 

Introduction

This work category A type of activity – not confined to a particular activity class, e.g. new roads (work category 323) appears in:

* activity class 12 – local road improvements
* activity class 13 – state highways improvements
provides for the routine work necessary to maintain the function, structural integrity and appearance of the following:

  • road bridges A structure designed to carry a road or path over an obstacle by spanning it. This includes culverts with a cross-sectional area greater than or equal to 3.4 square metres.
  • retaining structures
  • guardrails A rail erected to restrain vehicles from physically leaving the road, including wire-rope barriers.
  • tunnels
  • stock access structures
  • vehicular ferries
  • cattle stops
  • footpaths That portion of the road reserve set aside for the use of pedestrians only. on road structures
    • pedestrian over-bridges A structure designed to carry a road or path over an obstacle by spanning it. This includes culverts with a cross-sectional area greater than or equal to 3.4 square metres. /underpasses A grade separation where the traffic passes under an intersecting highway or railway. , and
    • bridge waterways when the bridge itself is directly affected.

 

This definition applies to the 2012-15 NLTP A National Land Transport Programme Interrelated and complementary combination of activities that, when delivered in a coordinated manner, produce synergies – can span more than one work category and more than one activity class, e.g. a programme could include a road improvement and public transport improvement activities. adopted by the NZTA under section 19 of the LTMA, as from time to time amended or varied .  For the 2015-18 NLTP please refer to the updated definition for work category 114.

 

Examples of qualifying activities

Examples of qualifying activities include, but may not be limited to:

  • repairs to handrails associated with structures
  • repairs to guardrails A rail erected to restrain vehicles from physically leaving the road, including wire-rope barriers. , including wire rope barriers
  • minor repairs to other components
  • all cleaning and painting
  • stream clearing and debris removal to maintain water courses under bridges A structure designed to carry a road or path over an obstacle by spanning it. This includes culverts with a cross-sectional area greater than or equal to 3.4 square metres.
  • repairs to protective works, and
  • hire charges for bailey bridges A temporary bridge of lattice steel designed for rapid assembly from prefabricated standard parts. (excluding temporary bridges A structure designed to carry a road or path over an obstacle by spanning it. This includes culverts with a cross-sectional area greater than or equal to 3.4 square metres. that are part of emergency works).

 

Other potential activities that are not in the above list should be discussed with the NZTA for eligibility.

 

Exclusions

This work category A type of activity – not confined to a particular activity class, e.g. new roads (work category 323) appears in:

* activity class 12 – local road improvements
* activity class 13 – state highways improvements
excludes:

  • significant new or improved preventive works – these are funded under Work category 241: Preventive maintenance
  • pedestrian bridges A structure designed to carry a road or path over an obstacle by spanning it. This includes culverts with a cross-sectional area greater than or equal to 3.4 square metres. affording access to roads, streets or highways, and
  • any bridge constructed by any agency subsequent to 1954 that does not conform to a recognised design code.
